Barack Hussein Obama was born on august forth 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Obama Sr. A black Kenyan and Ann Dunham. His parents divorced when he was two and he lived with his mother while his father went back to Kenya. In 1982 Barack Obama Sr. died in an automobile accident. After the divorce Obama’s mother married Lolo Soetono, and in 1967 they moved to Jakarta Indonesia where Lolo was originally from. Obama attended school there, where classes were only taught in the Indonesian language.
When Barack was ten he returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. In 1995 his mother died of ovarian cancer. Obama graduated from the esteemed Punahau Academy with honors in 1979. He was one of the three black students at the school. During those years he became aware of racism and what it meant to be an African American. During his teenage years in high school Obama admitted using alcohol, marijuana and cocaine at the 2008 civil forum he said it was one his greatest moral failures.
After high school Obama attended the occidental college for two years and then transferred to Columbia University in New York where he graduated with a degree in political science. On February 1988 Obama entered Harvard law school and was later elected to be the first African American editor of Harvard law review. He then graduated in 1991. He then worked a few years as a layer in Chicago. In 1995 Obama published an autobiography called Dreams of My Father, and won a Grammy for the audio version of the book. Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago law school and was a senior lecturer from 1996 to 2004.
In 1996 Barack Obama was elected to be the Illinois state senate as a democrat. Once he was elected he gained support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. He sponsored a law increasing tax credits for low income workers, negotiated welfare and promoted increased subsides for childcare; He was reelected in 1998 and in 2002. For the first time he decided to run for a seat in the U.S House of Representatives in 2000 but he lost. Later in 2004, he ran again and won the democratic primary with fifty-two percent of the votes.
After the nine eleven attacks Obama expressed his opposition of president bush’s will to go on a war with Iraq. During a rally at Chicago’s federal plaza in October 2002 he said “I am not opposed to all wars, I’m opposed to dumb wars”. Many times obama expressed his feeling about the war in Iraq saying that it was not a good thing, and continually opposed bush’s decision to go to war with Iraq for the wrong reasons.
On February Ten 2007 Obama announced his candidacy for president of the United States. Throughout the campaign Obama emphasized the issues of ending the war in Iraq, increasing energy independence and providing universal health care. He later announced that these were his top three priorities if he became president. At the beginning he was running against Hilary Clinton, but on the seventh of June she suspended her campaign and endorsed Obama. Now he is on a tight race against the republican nominee Senator John McCain.
