After denying it for days, the obama campaign finally admitted that a meeting with Canadian government representatives in Chicago did take place concerning NAFTA. The Canadians were told that what Obama was saying about NAFTA was nothing but political rhetoric. Obama has lied to Americans about his plans for NAFTA and he has lied to Americans about the meeting with the Canadians. How much more of his campaign and speeches are lies?
I think that most of Senator obama's supporters among the public at large love this country and they want to be proud of their president. They want to see positive things happen in US society, and in the world. They are a voice of optimism. I also appreciate their passionate involvement in this campaign and in this election. They do not wish to accept many things as they are.
I am fortunate in that I remember presidents who inspired me. Now that I am older, though, and have learned a lot since then, I realize that some of them did not deliver what I hope their image promised *to me in my mind.* Sometimes this is because they did not really want to, and sometimes it was because there are other people throughout the world who only care about themselves or their causes and, well, are just bad people.
This is why people talk so much about "connections"—even if a person does not agree with the things their connections want, those connections do not care, and think that they are "owed" something because they think that they helped their "friend" and somehow own him or her—like an overbearing father, sort of, but worse. If a person cannot stand up to the bullies they know, how can they stand up to bullies they don't know?
I don't think that Senator Obama has proven if he is willing and able to do this—yet—because right now he is trying to "make it" and does not feel free to say what he believes about some very important and specific issues, because he wants as many people to like him as possible—he is TOLD to make as many people like him as possible. To many people, the candidate they support is like a racehorse, a tool, not a person with their own ideas. Politics is a hard hard business.
